Shopify Custom Engraving fields

We are setting up our new Shopify store - for the moment going with a free theme, but would like to add custom engraving and color options fields. The business is a woodworking business, and we would like to give customers the option to engrave a name and pick the type of wood on a couple products. Then also be able to see this in cart, and for us to be able to see the choices made in the order.
I found a shopify help page with code, but this is too advanced for me. We'd prefer to hire someone to create solid code rather than pay a monthly app fee. As we develop the site, there may be more custom asks, so despite this being a one-off job posting, we'd like to establish a working relationship with someone who could help us with shopify custom elements moving forward.
