We normally use professionals software platforms like Altium for pcb design, Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks for structural design, and Atmel Studio for Firmware design. We have make many jobs related with led light design, temperature system control, distance measure indicator with ultrasonic system, servo controller system, inter alia.
