I have a somewhat unusual request. It's not exactly for translation, but for language review.
I just finished a draft of a short story based on my search for "the best mofongo in San Juan (Puerto Rico)." I would like to have the story vetted for language, specifically:
- Where the white character is attempting Spanish, does it sound like a white person attempting Spanish? (as in, the meaning comes across, but the word choices or grammar aren't quite right). - Where the Puerto Ricans are speaking Spanish, is it correct?
- And maybe most important: Where the Puerto Ricans are speaking Spanglish, does it avoid sounding stereotyped or offensive? These are based on real conversations, and I can sort of hear the various characters talking, so I'd like to keep it genuine if possible. But I realize it's a fine line between genuine and stereotype.
The story is short (10 pages), and the English/Spanish dialogue pieces only take up a small portion. (The whole story is in dialogue, but it's often between English-only-speaking characters.)
Please let me know if this is something you could help with.
