I am planning a workshop/storage structure in Franklin County, NC and would like to see whether this concept is structurally feasible and what it would cost for engineering and stamped drawings. Project concept I have three shipping containers: Two 40-ft containers on the sides One 45-ft container at the rear My preferred design is no outside posts. I would like the roof/trusses to sit on the containers, not on a separate pole-barn frame. Proposed layout Roof type: gable Roof size: approximately 45 ft wide × 40 ft long Trusses: approximately 45-ft span Two 40-ft side containers form the sides One 45-ft rear container is flush across the back Approximate clear center bay between side containers: 29 ft Important design intent I want to explore a design where: the roof is supported by the two 40-ft side containers there are no exterior posts the 45-ft rear container serves as the back wall/storage area the center remains open for workspace/equipment What I need reviewed Please let me know if you can evaluate and design: Whether the two 40-ft containers can structurally support the roof system Required beam/header size on top of the containers, if needed Truss-to-container / truss-to-beam connection details Wind/uplift and lateral bracing requirements for this location Any required reinforcement to the containers Foundation/support requirements under the containers Stamped drawings for permit, if feasible

Hi, how are you doing? I’m very interested in evaluating and designing your container-based workshop structure in Franklin County. I have experience with structural systems involving shipping containers, long-span trusses, and wind/uplift design, so I can assess feasibility and provide a safe, code-compliant solution. I can analyze whether the side containers can support the roof loads, design any required beams or headers, define truss connections, and address wind, uplift, and lateral stability. I’ll also outline any necessary container reinforcements, foundation requirements, and provide stamped drawings if the design is feasible. I’d be happy to review your layout and site conditions to confirm feasibility and guide you toward the most efficient and structurally sound solution. Best regards, Joe

Hello, no problem. I am a licensed structural engineer with experience in container-based structures and can evaluate the feasibility of your workshop design in Franklin County, NC. I will conduct a thorough structural analysis to determine if the two 40-ft side containers can safely support the proposed 45-ft span gable roof without exterior posts. This will include calculating required beam/header sizes on top of the containers, designing truss-to-container and truss-to-beam connections, assessing wind/uplift and lateral bracing requirements for your location, determining any necessary container reinforcements, and specifying foundation/support requirements. If feasible, I will provide a complete set of stamped engineering drawings for permit submission. I am ready to begin as soon as you share the site location (for wind/snow loads) and any container specifications. Sincerely, Lorenzo
