setting hindi and english on the same page has one specific trap, and it decides whether the book looks composed or slightly wrong in a way readers feel without naming. devanagari and latin do not share proportions. at the same point size devanagari reads smaller and sits differently against the line, because the letterforms hang from a headline rather than resting on a baseline. set both at twelve point and the hindi looks shrunken beside the english. so the two are sized and their leading set independently until they look equal, which is a judgement made by eye, not by matching numbers. the second decision is arrangement. facing pages with hindi left and english right, or stacked on one page. facing pages read beautifully and force both versions to occupy the same space, which constrains longer poems. stacked is more forgiving and less elegant. for a classroom, where students compare line by line, facing pages usually win if the poems allow it. for print i set it with proper bleed and margins from the start, since a class set will be printed rather than only read on screen. how many poems, and is it printed or distributed as a pdf?
