This project is a projection-mapped, sensor-driven sandbox game built in Unity, using Kinect v2 as the primary and authoritative sensor. A PC-driven projector renders all gameplay visuals, UI, and effects directly onto a physical sandbox surface. There are no screens, headsets, or traditional HUDs — the sandbox itself is the interface. The system tracks live terrain deformation and physical RC vehicles in real time and uses this data to drive interactive gameplay, visual effects, and environmental feedback. The immediate goal is to deliver a focused proof-of-concept vertical slice suitable for demos, investor pitches, and future expansion. A modified version of Senselab’s AR Sandbox (Unity) already exists and serves as the technical foundation. The scope of work is to extend this existing project with gameplay systems and projection-based UI, not to rebuild the sensing or rendering pipeline. Gameplay is organized into mini-games that can be run on timers or selected by an operator. -- Example mini-games include: -- - Flood Control: Players reshape terrain to redirect projected water flow away from protected zones. - Resource Discovery: Buried resources are revealed through digging and terrain changes, extending fuel or time. - Collection & Delivery: Physical objects are moved into projected loading zones to score points. All feedback — objectives, zones, hazards, time pressure, and scoring — is communicated exclusively through projection-mapped visuals on the sand. -- Projection-Based UI & Vehicle Feedback -- The projector functions as the sole UI layer, visually “annotating” the physical world. Vehicles are visually acknowledged and guided through projected effects that respond to movement, terrain, and game state. -- Key interaction elements include: -- - Vehicle halos and auras projected beneath each vehicle to indicate identity, fuel, or status - Directional and terrain feedback (cones, trails, ripples) to communicate intent, traction, and slope - Dynamic ground-projected objectives such as zones, paths, and delivery areas - Environmental time pressure represented through rising water, shrinking zones, or terrain visual changes - Event-based effects (bursts, pulses, particles) for scoring, success, or failure There are no traditional UI panels, menus, or HUD elements.
