SQUAD (Super-conducting Quantum Devices) is an SME working in the development and commercialisation of products based on cutting edge material and component technologies. They have extensive computing requirements spread over their small building. They do not bulk manufacture but produce product designs and prototypes.
SQUAD is currently expanding. They will be adopting a new building on the industrial site on which they are based, 150m from their current office. They are provided with high speed connections to the internet through the lease agreement on the site, but need to design a totally new network infrastructure.
The network needs to accommodate:
Link between buildings of 150m
In the old building:
15 administration machines used by managers and administrators, providing normal office applications and access to a file server.
A file server which will hold the company accounts, documents etc
A separate IP server which holds the companies very valuable Intellectual property
A boardroom with a networked data projector, wireless network and video conferencing facilities (4 addresses required)
In the new building
An engineering server which is used primarily for applications and data associated with mechanical, software and material engineering.
5 mechanical engineering/design workstations
10 software engineering work stations
5 material science workstations
A prototyping workshop which contains the following network machines:
2 laser cutters
2 micro CNC mills.
1 laser sintered titanium rapid prototyping machine
1 ABS extrusion rapid prototyping machine
SQUAD currently own a router which implements a software firewall etc. and has 4 fast Ethernet connections a connection to the ISP and a spare slot for further connections should this be required to provide the link to the new building.
The ISP has provided a SINGLE class C address, so an address scheme based on private addresses is required.
The machines in the prototyping workshop can create a significant amount of electrical noise. Back-ups to the IP server happen periodically. Data traffic during these times if relatively high.
You are required to design a suitable network structure including media, network components (routers and switches) and address scheme including any VLANs. You need not specify particular devices (such as switches and routers) but those devices employed must of a type which is freely available.
Your report will show the network diagrammatically and describe the address scheme. All design decisions will be justified. Any calculations will be given and all assumptions stated.
You are required to develop and describe (based on current practice) a process for the isolation and identification of network issues.
Then using this process and your design from task A suggest possible causes for a lack of connectivity from ONE of the workstations in the new building to the internet. Your answer should discuss how the tests would be performed and what it is that will be learnt from them.
