Problem statement/Research objective: Introduction ACME is a manufacturing company which produces and distributes electronic components. The company is currently using a two warehouse distribution scheme in the Northeast United State of America. The warehouses are located at New Jersey and Massachusetts .The warehouses receive items from the manufacturing plant which is located in Chicago and have a lead time of one week, the time of delivery of products to the customers after the order is placed. The manufacturing facility is capable of meeting the demands for both the warehouses. The company is able to serve its customers with 97 percent service level. The two warehouse scheme was designed and put into effect several years ago and since then there has not been any changes made to this scheme. The CEO of the company now wants to revise the existing distribution scheme. Business question The question that the CEO has is: Should the company shirt to a single warehouse scheme. The new system will convert the current distribution system into a centralized scheme. But the CEO wants to have the same level of customer service level of 97 percent. Shifting to a single warehouse technique will give the same level of customer level while reducing the inventory level. But at the same time it will give rise to new problems of accurate demand analysis and forecasting. Also the location that is to be chosen in order to meet the existing demand and at the same time reduce the inventory with same customer service is a big concern.
