Mechanical Design Engineer

Ryan Watson BEng (Hons) AMIMechE PROFILE: A bright, articulate and driven self-starter with the ability to break down complex problems into manageable parts. Confident and personable with excellent communication skills. A very competent computer user with good experience with the majority of Microsoft applications, Solidworks and 2D CAD software. KEY SKILLS: 3D Modelling Technical report writing Technical presentation Hydraulic analysis Design For Manufacture Technical Drawing to BS 8888 EMPLOYMENT: February 2012 – November 2012 Self Employed Contractual Mechanical Design Engineer Pennant Training Systems Ltd. I contracted for Pennant for over 9 months as a mechanical design Engineer. Pennant Training Systems specialise in training solutions for various different institutions. The majority of the work is in the defence industry including work for the RAF and other allied nation air forces; however training solutions for energy companies have also been provided. Contract work is very fulfilling as it requires a very direct and concise work ethic which results in faster progress. The majority of the work has been focused on the design and manufacture of two Wildcat training simulator helicopters for use by the MOD to train engineers and soldiers on the new Lynx Wildcat helicopter built in Yeovil by Augusta Westland. There have been a number of other projects I have been involved in, all focused around training solutions for the MOD. Producing technical drawings for Wildcat simulator structure and LRU’s – redesigning components where necessary and utilising efficient and effective manufacturing processes to save money. Analysis of Gaseous Oxygen Training System (GOTS) to ensure system meets training criteria set out by RAF. Redesign system to improve effectiveness and provide a quote for new system. System fully modelled up and drawn which included reverse engineering pilot’s personal breathing apparatus to allow manufacture of replica units. Hardware Engineer for the Synthetic Environment Procedural Trainer (SEPT). Liaising with software engineers to ensure that the hardware is in place in which their software is to integrate. Includes ensuring compatibility with old and new hardware. Mechanical design engineer for the VRPT sensor bracket modification. Involves producing a mounting prototype for the sensor due to a new requirement for it to be mounted upside down. Design must be robust as sensor is heavy, application is dynamic and sensor mounts present a cantilever scenario (i.e. they are only on one side). August 2010 – February 2012 Research and Development Engineer Neoperl U.K. Ltd. Neoperl is a multi-national privately owned company specialising in the design and manufacture of products for the water industry OEM market. As a Research and Development Engineer my role is to ensure the continuous improvement of existing products to improve reliability and also to develop new products for future markets to ensure the company’s continuing success through customer satisfaction. Conceived and implemented a new design system to help continually improve the design of products; by laying out a new prototype design procedure and specifying and overseeing the creation of a design–flow performance database that tracks design effectiveness thus improving product performance and consistency as well as shortening lead time for new tooling. Mould production capacity increase through the creation of procedures that allow multi cavity moulding; this involved ensuring consistent tool design and manufacture by insisting a single machining process and removing outdated manufacturing techniques and equipment. The careful consideration for tooling longevity and consistency in design combined with the consequently shortened lead-time for tooling manufacture contributed to the feasibility of multi-cavity moulding. This innovation directly impacted the increased production capacity delivered allowing cancellation of a planned new factory for that specific purpose. Initiated and implemented a new reference database relating crucial information and increasing traceability that reduced design/fault diagnostics times. This was done by linking the insert number with a design which is key information to seeing our designs in action. Increased understanding of regulator operation and limitations; Including the effects of restriction on regulators and how to calculate and approximate pressure drops of systems to create a more precise pressure range tolerance for our customer and increasing simplicity of design and manufacture from origin. Developed new solutions to meet the requirements of customers to which our current products were inadequate; this involves careful consideration of design and manufacturing capabilities and possibilities that fall outside of the current limitations of our existing product designs, materials and components. Reverse Engineering of competitor products and evaluation to check against cost savings or increased benefits from alternate designs. Recently dismantled a competitor product manufactured in the USA which was essentially over-engineered this resulted in us seeing potential to enter a new market due to ability to undercut the competition with regards to price. Clearing and tidy cluttered “tired” storage positions which involved drastic short term disruption for the longer term efficiency of the company; This was something that was widely known to need doing and was avoided by all. The task was well known to be time consuming and laborious and was just accepted as a job that needed regularly doing instead of something that should be routinely maintained through procedures and tracking. Key player and contributor into the increase of “on time delivery” from 50% to over 97% - This was done as a result of a lot of previously mentioned processes and solutions. Product performance failure was a large part of late deliveries combined with manufacturing moulding times.
