Pocket Lighter Redesign
This was the first project for the final year (2012) of my studies in Industrial Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The main aim of the project was to deconstruct a mass-produced product in order to gain an understanding of the various components and their relationship to one-another. It was also necessary to use ones own design interpretation to redesign the product to achieve the 'wow factor'. My own interpretation of the redesign focused on tactile recognition of the product, when it would not be visible in low-light conditions, or where it may be buried in a bag amongst other items. The first image shows the original lighter used for reference and the redesigned lighter. A full features and benefits list is provided below that, showing the internal components including a complete exploded view. The second image shows the development of various concepts, including potential colour combinations.
