Outstanding achievement in the performance of his duties as fire team leader 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, 2nd Marine Division Forward from February 2011 to July 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During this period, Sergeant Shields led his fire team on more than 100 mounted and dismounted patrols. Sergeant Shields has effectively led his fire team on more than six company and battalion level operations, ranging from census patrols to heliborne assaults. In addition to serving as a fire team leader, Sergeant Shields manned the night shift of the entry control point at Camp Dwyer for a three month period. He was responsible for screening over 50 local nationals each night and ensuring the safety of the Marines at Camp Dwyer. Sergeant Shields personally ensured that all search personnel and associated equipment were mission capable to present the necessary posture for the security of the entry control point. Sergeant Shields' outstanding motivation and dedication to duty reflected credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps.
