The approach adopted was to write an Excel addin in C#.Net making use of the Excel-DNA framework, and the PDFSharp library for pdf operations. The pdf merge functionality was made available to Excel as a user defined function =MergePdfFiles(file_list) and via a COM interface. The PDFSharp library was built from the latest source code, and a C#.Net library was written to contain the merge fucntionility which calls the PDFSharp library. Both libraries were packaged into an Excel-DNA xll file which included a ribbon button to trigger an About popup with the library version details.

The requirement was to be able to extract the .Net dll library files, and the .dna source code from an Excel-DNA xll Excel addin file that had previously been packed with the Excel-DNA Pack command line utility. An online search revealed a concept project which was coded to extract a specific xll file. After triangulating this code with the source code of both the Pack utility and the Excel-DNA runtime, I was able to develop a generic UnPack command line utility (in C#.Net) to extract dll library files, the dna source file, and any included image files (for icons etc). A final step was to automatically adjust the contents of the unpacked .dna file to recreate the source needed to repack the xll add-in file.
