In late 2011 I set out on a bicycle tour around the US, New Zealand and Australia. Covering over 5000 miles we carried everything we needed on the back of our bikes but I just couldn't resist keeping my inner developer happy while out of the office.

I was keen to keep friends and family back home up to date with our progress and I wanted a way to communicate with other bike tourers who might be interested in doing the same route. This WordPress blog is perfect for updating on the move - the iPhone App allows me to make short updates or publish photos over a 3G connection, and I carried a small Acer netbook for publishing posts when wifi was available.

Rapid Development with Zend Framework

This resource was created originally as a printed leaflet, and was brought to me with the task of making it online and interactive. Working with ideas from teachers and energy experts I began the process of breaking up the graphics from the leaflet and creating a linear game progression.

Each of the 6 rooms in the house is investigated in turn and pupils are asked to choose the 5 changes they could make to save the most CO2. Only after the game is complete do they receive their score and get the opportunity to better it.

An Eco-Flash Game for Schools

This is quite a large project which involved several developers to create an online store where customers could select wedding stationary and personalise it all online. The main part of the store is build in the Zend Framework, but my responsibility was to develop the Flash engine for customising the invites in a user-friendly way.

The CMS for the store allows the client to create and manage the invite templates. There is a separate Flash interface for creating these templates which lets the owner manage text areas, images and masks on the invites. They can select which areas can be edited by customers and which fonts, colours and image options are available for each one.

The interface must be easy for customers to use but still give them the power to customise their stationary and see what looks like before committing to purchase. Depending on the template selected, the customer can upload their own images onto the stationary, choose the fonts they would like to
