NASA Contests: Storyboard for 2 Minute Video/Animation for REALM Project

  • Durum: Closed
  • Ödül: $500
  • Alınan Girdiler: 35
  • Kazanan: Psytest

Yarışma Özeti

The goal of this challenge is to create a storyboard for a 2-minute animation that describes NASA’s REALM project to the general public. A background summary is provided below, although careful reading of the attached detailed description is recommended. The winning solution will be developed into a video via a separate freelancer activity, for which submitters, and others, are eligible to participate.

Background

REALM (RFID-Enabled Autonomous Logistics Management) is a 3-phased experimental project based on RFID (radio frequency identification) technologies. The primary objective is to learn how to automate logistics management for future space exploration missions. While early stages of the REALM experiments are focused on solutions to automate activities such as inventories and item searches, future experiments that allow robotic interaction with logistics, such as unpacking or setup in advance of human arrival, are anticipated. It is considered critical for beyond–Low Earth Orbit missions, in which ground support for finding items is impractical and re-launch of missing items is not an option. It also improves packing efficiencies for reduced stowage volume. The REALM team is using the International Space Station as a test bed to evaluate and mature the relevant technologies.

The attached PDF provides a description of the REALM system in more detail along with images of the system.

The following links to models of the International Space Station provide content that may be used in submissions:

https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/detail/iss-internal
https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/models

Solution Requirements
• Storyboard and script for a 2-minute video or animation that describes the REALM experiments for a non-technical audience; i.e., the general public
• Each image of the storyboard should typically have a corresponding section of script
• Format should be pdf, illustrator, jpegs, or other common image formats.
• Use of the REALM logo is encouraged (artwork provided as attachment)
• Graphics are provided with the intent of providing a complete overview. While the graphics may be used in submissions, inclusion is not required.

Evaluation Criteria
• The video storyboard is intended to convey the concept of the REALM project and why it is important to NASA.
• Quality: Does the submission look professional?
• Requirements: Does the submission meet the stated requirements?
• Clarity: Does the submission describe the 3 phases of REALM in terms understandable by the general public?
• Originality
• Suitability: Is the submission suitable for implementation as a 2-minute video on a limited budget (e.g., car chases and explosions may exceed our budget)
• Stirs public interest

Please note that NASA employees/contractors are not eligible for competing in this contest.

The challenge is officially closed! Thank you to all of the Freelancers who participated in this contest! We received some really great submissions and we will be working to review them and announce the winners soon. Thank you for all of your hard work to help NASA better communicate about what we are doing to advance space exploration.

My updated entry disappeared?!? This site is not the greatest at keeping track. I actually paid for sealed twice, yet both were visible, the first time I entered it didn't even upload. Very frustrating. Now it says I withdrew it! Arrgghh! It's entry #19 and I just resubmitted it. I'm so sorry for the mix-up.

    Hi,

On your REALM storyboard clarification n1.pdf document I read:

"We want people to understand why this is an experiment, as opposed to simply adoption of mature technology."

Could you provide examples of what you are referring to as "mature technology"? Is there a technology that you could have used instead of RFID or simply there isn't any other options?

    Thank you,

Sure. The use of this type of RFID technology (passive tag, EPCglobal C1-G2) is fairly mature when it is used to track objects passing through a choke point, say a portal or gate, when the objects are not so densely packed that they start to obscure each other. This is the case in common supply chain applications (e.g., in/out of warehouses) in which tags exist on boxes or pallets, but not individual items. The problem becomes much more difficult when it is a requirement to: (i) track all individual items, (ii) the individual items can be densely packed, and (iii) the items need to be localized accurately in 3D space (not just on one side of a portal or the other). There are other RFID technologies based on battery-powered tags that allow more accurate 3D localization, but we don't want to rely on battery powered tags due to their size and limited life span. So in the REALM experiments we are attempting to employ machine learning to overcome the limitations of the RFID technology.

Hi. Just one small question; because you have allowed entrants to use graphics from the NASA website, would you also allow us to use screenshots from a video you have uploaded on youtube, namely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doN4t5NKW-k ? Please respond ASAP. If it is not allowed, then I would have to draw the same. I have a great concept, but not the graphic skills. Do let me know if it's ok or not.

When I was a teen, I built a 1/10 scale lunar module for my kid brother's Major Matt Mason doll, so I've always wanted to be involved with any NASA project. Thanks for sponsoring this contest and I hope you like my entry. As a side note note, I'm a video producer as well and am capable of doing this project from start to finish. Whats the range of RFID in space? 100 meters or 1 centimeter?

    • 6 yıl önce
    1. nasacoeci

      • 6 yıl önce

About 10m for a tag that is 4" x 1", when there is reasonably clear line-of-sight from the reader antenna to the tag, and we are transmitting at the maximum 1/2 Watt. Smaller tags have more restricted range, say 1-3m, but some items cannot accommodate the larger tags. The higher power is good for finding items that might be buried, but can be a disadvantage when attempting to track moving items. This is because the higher power results in more tags responding, so a tag in motion could get missed if it passes through before the reader gets to it. We are experimenting with power levels and duty cycles; i.e., higher power for a while then lower power.

Since the results of the contest are to provide a full concept for an animated video, it is important for each shot to be fully described. At least a simple graphic to understand each shot is really recommended. The main thing is to communicate clearly your concept for the video such that we can evaluate it. Best of luck!
