     Yes, you can purchase a sealed upgrade for your individual entry. (Which I did for my entry here, #122 .)
     
     Otherwise, sealing an entry is not a choice (if the freelancer has no funds available for whatever reason).
     
     Requesting that the CH seal the contest levels the playing field for everyone, regardless of whether they can or can't purchase the upgrade themselves. Requests to seal never hurt and are a courtesy.
     
     Even though it is an extra $9 for the CH, their contest is better served by sealing as it is critical to originality.
     
     Two recent examples: in one contest, entry 8 had an original design idea. Entries 30 and 35, by a different freelancer, took that idea and executed it better. Now the later entries will probably win.
     
     In another contest, CH complained that he kept getting "elephant logo designs" because he rated one highly. He later rejected all elephant designs, even the one he had originally rated highly.
