Alter existing java applet to allow bigger preview images

We have a web application that loads photos into a database.
There is a java applet that runs through the web page on the client.
When the client import an image through the applet you can choose the size of the preview image it generates. It’s the Preview size that we need to increase. Currently the max is 500px – I want to be able generate them at 800px, so it would be good if it was set to a max of 1000px.
We don';t have the source code because the original company who developed it is dead. The jar is not encrypted though.
