Use PHP to display Wordpress thumbnail

I need to display some images from Wordpress A displayed on Wordpress site B, but as Wordpress site A is within an htaccess protected members area I need to serve those images via PHP instead of the normal direct link that the_post_thumbnail or the_post_thumbnail_url would provide. As the htaccess stops those images loading.
I have an almost working page to do this; everything except the images works.
I need a super simple [login to view URL] I can use in place of these to serve up the images.
