Step 2: Prepare a short (1,000words) critical REVIEW of the article. In your
review you should explain and explore the objectives of the study, its underlying methodological assumptions and how the analysis undertaken helps achieve the research objectives. You should also identify and discuss any limitations inherent in the article.

The main purpose of this assignment is to help you develop critical thinking skills. This will provide you with a firm foundation on which to develop your reading and writing skills for the remainder of the course (additional information on ‘thinking critically’ can be found below)
When writing a critical review of an article, you goal is to summarise, evaluate, and offer critical comment on the ideas and information that the author(s) present in the article. To help you do this, you should ask yourself the following questions:
1. What contribution to knowledge does the author seek to make?
2. How does the author arrive at his research objectives?
3. What methodology does the author employ to achieve these objectives?
4. What philosophical assumptions underpin the use of this methodology?
You may wish to consider the philosophical perspectives introduced to
you in FOK to draw out the underlying assumptions? For example is
quantitative/qualitative research informed by positivistic/interpretive
approach?

To help answer these questions you will need to conduct a close reading of the article. You will also need to read more widely around the topic. Only by reading around the subject area will you develop a more detailed and critical appreciation of the article and the arguments made therein. Evidence of relevant wider reading in your review will be one of the marking criteria used to assess your assignment.
