customization of wordpress theme navigation / sub-navigation

I need to display child categories on the parent page that can be clicked through to the child category page...probably using some sort of call like:
$categories=get_categories('child_of=3');
foreach($categories as $category) {
once on the child category page, I need the link to have a 'select-filter' class added so users know what sub-category they are in. Each parent category will have at least 6+ different children.
...I don't need a jquery filterable portfolio - I prefer the sub-category pages to re-load as I'm using a star rating system that needs
?r_sortby=highest_rated&r_orderby=desc attached to the url for sorting.....
I also have separate wordpress installations on my host since they no longer deal with wordpress MU - the separate sites are exactly the same so i'll need to be able to port the navigation code over to the other sites.
Here is what is shown when someone is on the parent category (note all children categories are listed - just hardcoded LI's at the moment): ![][1]
When a child (orange) category is clicked, on page load, i want the specific category that is clicked to be given a class that is already created: ![][2]
now the categories and the actual content are split up into 2 different php files....a category file and a gallery file (just how the theme was built). let me know if there are any questions.
