1. City of Dervish
- the religious principal of the Wildan
- Springtime had banished the chill of winter, swelling rivers with melted snow, and leaving a procession of cherry blossoms on the road to Dervish. Petals would float and fall, with a backdrop of azure skies, while Apatura butterflies swerved between them like a dance. There were only memories of the frost, found on snow-topped mountains in the distance.
- The city was cradled inside a canyon formed long ago during Sky-fall. Buildings were made of sandy-hued rock and stood like beloved patriarchs overlooking their descendants, with moustache-like stone arches crossing canals. There was a history emanating from every crack and crevice, an ambiance found from shrine and streets alike, an aura which provoked rumination and reflection. The city’s streets were spokes, the hub the central temple: a pagoda, terraced and flower-like in appearance, protected on either side by iron towers. It was an ever-evolving place, not from history or architecture, or from artistry or allure, but simply because we were not alone. In Lemuriana, when people visit religious sites to worship, they do so from the warmth of shelter and sanctuary, with ceilings overhead and carpets underneath. Yet there were no roofs or rugs for worshippers in Dervish, only rain. The devoted, both young and old, students and seniors, would come, flocking for a morning of prayer, prostration and pleading, burning incense at the foot of the shrine, wishing for prosperity in both the present and future. No sleet or showers would stop them. I stood there, as the convoy found shelter, watching the to and fro, remembering my family lost throughout the Wildan. I wished they were with me, explaining why, in a world where spirituality and sensibility were dividing, I had found comfort in that fusion of old and new, ancient and avant-garde, faith and reality.
