As a data scientist, my role is to use cutting edge, state of the art tools to find insights in data sets that wouldn't be otherwise visible. The vast majority of the data available today exists in unstructured form - think product reviews/descriptions, social media posts and comments, news articles, pictures, and videos. Thanks to advances in Natural Language Processing, tools like SpaCy can give us new insights into text data. OpenCV gives us the ability to identify trends, patters, or threats in video files. My interest in data science and machine learning is rooted in a deep desire to make a positive impact on the world. Convolutional Neural Networks with multiple hidden layers are very, very good at image analysis. When equipped with an appropriate training set, a properly trained neural network has the power to detect cancerous cells very early, giving patients a huge advantage in a life-changing struggle. This is just one of the many ways in with ML can change the world, and I am so excited to be part of it!
