I've always wanted to work with the CAN bus shield! Sounds like a fun project. I'm good at Python and Arduino. Converting code shouldn't be much of a problem. However I would like to point out that much of it will have to be written from scratch. Python gives a lot of tools which won't be available in the 8bit atmega's. And depending on the amount of 'brute force' required might have to use a Due. Luckily though I like pushing hardware to the limit and will try to stick to the Uno as much as possible. Huh.. just realised how cool it would be to have engine diagnostics of your car.. You should add a GPS shield, an IMU and log everything. Might make for some fun maps. (PS if you don't have your heart set o arduino, might I suggest Linkit One? comes with onboard GPS)
