We are in the process of taking recipes located on static pages and inputting them into a mysql database.
Some tools have been created, and steps taking to assist in this effort. First, the pages containing all the stray recipes have been combined into one large file, and have been processed so that most of the html has been stripped out, and the recipes formatted so that they are easy to find. Second, I have created a web interface for inserting the recipes, so it truly is cut and paste.
I have found that the best way to do it is to have the large data file open in a text editor on one side of the screen, and have a browser window with the mysql interface opened on the other side. Then it simply is a cut and paste job from one screen to another, and submit to the database. I have attached a screen shot of this process to give you a better idea of how it works.
A recipe usually has 3 parts. While the database allows several fields for the recipe, only 3 are used at this point. The name, ingredients, and instructions.
The data file contains about 5000-6000 recipes, and is about 35.5MB in size. I have attached the first 2 MB or so of the data file so you can better get an idea of what you will be having to deal with.
I have already cut and pasted some 3600 of the recipes, and would estimate this will take about 15 hours to complete if using the cut and paste keyboard shortcuts.
