I have worked on android TV box that is also called as Kodi Box OTT Box or streaming box, is a TV Box built for streaming purposes. I have worked with Kodi / XBMC that allows to stream any movie / TV series or channel. I am currently working on a mobile app for both the platform's (iOS & Android), Regarding real time streaming i have used webrtc, wowza, quick blox, Red, openfire, Xmpp. For real time updations i've used socket IO also. I have good hands working experience with real time communication. I suggest you node.js for webserver and python for backend and for messing I'll use Xmpp and socket.
