I am an experienced Linux administrator. I can authenticate myself so you could be sure that I will do no harm to your server / services nor abuse your data. Also, I am ready to sign NDA if needed. I can be verified for example by VAT EU number. I have my own infrastructure that could be used for backup purposes. Firewall would not help much. Actually in most cases would not help at all. If this was incoming DoS/DDoS you shouldn't be blocked because you are a victim and a role of your provider is to protect you and to mitigate effects of such attacks. So probably this is about outgoing DoS/DDoS attack for which your server was abused. Lately there's high activity of chinese-origin trojan that infects Linux machines using brute-force SSH (I was recovering one machine from it yesterday) In case of security breach best solution is to wipe everything out, rebuild your server from scratch, install security patches and restore your data / applications from backups (I hope you have such) Of course it would be great to get an idea about how this security breach was done to eliminate possibility in future. Hello, I'm a system engineer, actively working in a country-wide ISP, engineering Linux based servers. A (D)DOS attack (Denial Of Service) put simply is puting heavy load on your server because it allows it. For example imagine opening your web page a zillion times in seconds (for abuse, naturally), making the web server to load the CPU so heavy that it cannot serve any more web pages and making it refuse connections (that's "denial of service"), and also putting a large load on the ISP as a side effect. This can be prevented by a stateful firewall, that would limit the number of connections from one IP to a reasonable number, etc, etc. An opposite situation is, when you have a malicious php code on your server (not unusual), making loging into your server possibble and then starting a DDOS attack FROM your server on someone. I have a background in windows and linux server administration and network security. My approach would be to dig through the server logs to see if I can find any indication as to what is causing the excessive traffic. Then run a malware scan to remove any malicious scripts, and finally install an opensource IDS/firewall. I am available to work on this any time and could have it complete over the weekend.
