Have just finished from installing and configuring Nagios XI for large organization, monitoring routers, switches, firewall, servers, Access points, PBX and UPS. the monitoring is done through SNMP if the device itself support SNMP or through ICMP if it doesn't support SNMP. it monitors all services related to servers and different services related to network equipment such as Bandwidth, connectivity, availability, CPU, RAM..etc. you even can add additional plugin to support your requirement Please see the snapshot in my portfolio Regards

One of my largest clients has 4 x 16 node ESXi 6.5 clusters backed by pair of Pure storage M70R2 arrays for tier1 and a pair of NetApp A330 for tier2. For them the I built a monitoring solution based on Nagios XI to monitor everything from datacenter PDUs to Server hardware to Storage to Windows/RedHat VMs. I would love to talk more about the details of your project.
