Access is still the correct tool, but you should use Access ADP (Access Data Project) that connects directly to a MS SQL Server database. This will provide all of the power and flexibility you should ever need. I created an Access-ADP/SQL Server solution for a small chain of grocery stores that allows them to track direct store delivery receiving as items are unloaded from the truck. As items are taken off the truck, they are barcode scanned; this process automatically creates a receiving record by auto-populating important fields by retrieving data from a remote master POS database. The Access application can be installed on a tablet or mini laptop (or any laptop), and the barcode scanner can be wireless.
Using a MS SQL Server backend database will provide powerful reporting and statistical analysis capabilities. The free version of MS SQL Server now includes SQL Server Reporting Services.
I have 15 years of experience with Access and 11 years with SQL Server. I would like to point out that it is very easy to underestimate the complexity and scope of a project such as yours.
My MS Access experience covers everything from complex, multi-user distributed (front end – back end) applications, to quick, disposable, ad hoc utilities. I am proficient in Access SQL and VBA, so I am able to code complex business logic and create very intuitive, easily-navigated user interfaces. I also have extensive knowledge of Access ADP (Access front end, SQL Server back end) applications. Many of my Access databases have been in daily use for years without any serious problems.
As a data modeler, I know how to create a data structure that is flexible and able to grow and change along with your business requirements. My Access user interfaces are intuitive and designed for easy, stream-lined data entry. I also have the VBA coding skills to make the user interface as user-friendly as required. Access is also my favorite report writing environment, so my reports compliment the data structure and the user interface.
Follow up support for my client is something I take very serious. The manner in which I design and document a project enables me to quickly provide technical support and revisions, even after years of separation from the project. My work and availability schedule is very flexible and accommodating. Numerous references and samples of my work are available upon request. A full guarantee accompanies all of my work, and my clients are not expected to pay for anything they are not satisfied with.
Remote collaboration has been very successful using Remote Desktop, GoToMeeting and GoToMyPC.
