Hello,
I am a trained scriptwriter with a master's in screenwriting with some experience in TV.
Let me start by saying that education, more specifically the role of a good teacher, is something I'm immensely passionate about. I did not have good teachers for most of my childhood and when I finally found the right teacher, it was one door opening after another, horizons expanding and this sense of finally stepping into who I was. I've remained curious about what is going on in schools and systems around the world.
It's never a good idea though to write a show from a mission statement. This brings with it the risk of the show becoming 'messagey' or preachy. The intelligent thing to do here would be to simply make this the mission statement of Dewey and then build the premise around that. Man against the system and transformation are wonderful solid tropes that you can tell great stories from. What are the obstacles he faces and overcomes? How does he change? Once we have a solid premise then all the writing will flow from there.
I have a lot more feedback on the first episode but I'm running out of space. The first couple of pages is clunky with exposition but starts flowing really well once Dewey goes to the school. Just intercutting between Dewey, the different principals, students, teachers etc; there's just so much potential here to explore so many different themes.
If all of this resonates than hit me up and we can talk more details.
Regards,
Jeshiro
