I am a MySQL tech speaker and a blogger too MySQLDump is a logical backup and will cause locking, The best way is using a hot backup solution like xtrabackup. It is better to encrypt the backup on S3. Xtrabackup will help in encryption too. +10 years Sys Admin. Pretty simple script 1- Create Dump of DB 2- Gzip DB dump and add current date 3- Upload to Amazon 4- We could verify that it upload ok using md5 5- add a cron that would execute this script.

I can create a bash script which can create and upload a file to the AWS storage. Using SSH, and encryption in the file. And even it can send you a email (if it is possible in your server) and inclusively a hash number for integrity control.
