We have been using a Stickam service for over a year. We would like to improve the latency issues we have been facing. Understanding the reason may help us to decrease latency, establish consistent broadcasts and have a reliable product.
We did some testing to see the relationship between bandwidth/ping and latency in time. One person broadcasted for an hour and three people were viewing. Although three users have (seemingly) comparable bandwidth/ping at the end of an hour, they have very different delays. We have collected the data and you can find it as attachment. Our questions are:
1. What could be reason for this variation in delay time? How can we prevent huge delays?
2. Is there any way to monitor how much delay each user has? Is it possible to send a signal to the user to refresh her/his page (which we found will usually decrease delays that are over 5 seconds)?
Other issues:
1. How does Stickam handle users from all over the world? If users are connecting from Europe, do they still need to connect to the LA server or are they using servers in Europe?
We are looking for someone who can guide us on these issues and others. Please email us.
Thank you.
